Swami Vivekananda was born on 12^th January, 1863 in Kolkata (previously known as Calcutta). He was a renowned spiritual leader and social reformer. His birth name was Narendranath Dutta. However later in life, after the demise of his Guru Swami Ramakrishna Paramhansa, when he founded Ramakrishna Math along with other 14 disciples of Shri Ramakrishna and took vows of monkhood, his name was changed to Vivekananda meaning rejoicing in knowledge.

His literary works include Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga,  My Master, Lectures from Colombo to Almora. He remarkably introduced Hinduism to the world by giving brilliant speeches in Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in 1893. He then stayed in America for almost two and a half years and founded Vedanta Society of New York. He returned to India in 1897 and started Ramakrishna Mission to help the people in need. They established schools, colleges and hospitals and also provided teachings of Vedanta to all. He died at a young age of 39 after accomplishing so much in his short life.
