Mistakes to avoid in an Argument

A relationship does not require you to be perfect all the time. A good relationship does not mean that you both should love to do the same things or you will never have any fights and life would forever go on smiling and laughing with you two in each other’s arms. All relationships have their fair share of struggles and ups and downs, it is just how fast you resolve the issues and bounce back to normal that defines the strength of your relationship. Sometimes despite our best efforts, we find that we are having constant fights and arguments which never seem to resolve and keep on piling in our minds and heart. Now fights never occur in the right state of mind and it is extremely difficult to control our response at that time but it is very important to remember that harsh words can hurt more than anything in the world. It is of utmost importance to avoid the following things while arguing with your loved ones:

  • Revisiting the Past: We all are often guilty of making this mistake. Instead of just trying to settle the issue at hand we raise the issues of the past which were already discussed. This habit of revisiting the past whenever something happens works as fuel in the already blazing fire. Avoid discussing the past and try to remedy the present situation.

  • Passing the Judgement: We sometimes just put a label on the person like ” you are an aggressive person”, ” you are a control freak” etc. Instead of labeling a person negatively we should try and understand the point of view of the other person and phrase our sentence positively. We could say ” you sometimes lose your temper too soon” or ” you sometimes tend to become too possessive”. This will help the other person understand the actual problem. Even if at that time they are too defensive they will not be hurt and may realize their mistake when they ponder over the issue later. It is also important to note that do not ever be in a relationship that is actually abusive in either way physical or emotional and if the person is really aggressive or controlling just stay away from such a relationship.

  • Trivializing the Matter: Sometimes it feels that the other person is arguing over a simple matter which could easily be avoided. Instead of trivializing the matter and saying things like you are making a mountain out of a molehill, just hear what the other person is trying to say. Sometimes things which we find trivial are very important to the other person or maybe that many little things which you did not realize were happening recently and that made the person react a little more than required or the other person may be troubled by something else entirely and was looking for a vent. Either way, when you hear the other person you may be able to work out things in a positive manner.

  • Keeping Scores: Do not ever keep scores of the things in the relationship. Now it may seem strange but we often say during arguments that we have been fighting a lot because you keep making mistakes all the time, or I have been apologizing all the times recently and you never take any initiative to solve the matter. It may seem like a simple thing to say but keeping scores like these bring out a sense of competition which will only increase the arguments. See if you say you have been apologizing all the time it may seem like you apologized just for the sake of ending the argument instead of realizing your mistake. It may be correct but it will demean all the previous apologies and the other person may find it difficult to trust your ”sorry” in the future. Keeping score may also put the other person on a defensive mode and that would accelerate the situation pretty fast as you both will be busy upping your scores and throwing bouncers to defeat the other person instead of resolving the matter. Do not make it a competition of who has hurt the other person more by actually hurting each other again and again by saying ugly things in the ugliest possible way. Calm down, take a breath and discuss.

  • Keeping Grudges: Sometimes we hold grudges against something that our loved one has done or said and bottle those feelings which leads to a sudden outburst. Avoid bottling up your feelings and try to resolve them or forgive them as soon as possible.

  • Raising Voice: Now that is the hardest one to control. Arguments are meant to be done in a loud voice so that the other person can understand our frustration and anger. But when we raise our voice the other person does not understand the words we say, the matter we have raised, or how hurt we are, the other person only hears our tone, our anger and thus responds in a higher tone to subdue you. Try to argue quietly. Now that seems contradictory but try to keep your anger and tone in check.

  • Walking Away: It is literally the worst thing that you can do. You may justify it as a ”time out” to pacify the situation, but it leaves the other person feeling frustrated and unimportant. Never walk away from your loved one as the other person will feel abandoned. Try to resolve the issue then and there because it will prevent it from getting bigger and uglier. If you absolutely feel the need to quieten the storm brewing inside you just let your partner know that and try to make them understand instead of just walking out and leaving them behind with the most negative thoughts they can come up with.

  • Argument or Sarcasm in Front of Others: Do not, in any circumstance, show your differences in front of other people. It not only makes your partner feel insulted but also makes your relationship a laughingstock. Always keep your matters private.

I hope you and I can remember these things when we share some heated moments with our partner. Do let me know.

Potty Training-Is it Really As Hard As It Seems?

Your child is reaching all  the milestones, making you feel amazed at what all your little one has learnt in this past one or two years. Now you feel it is the time to potty train your baby but it feels like a very big task and you feel confused at when to start and how to start. There are many available articles on this already but they make you feel overwhelmed instead of prepared. There is no right way or guide to anything when it comes to parenting. I am just sharing some tips that helped me potty train my child at 1.2 years.

  • Start from Teaching to Use the Washroom: I started making my child wear underwear instead of diapers at the age of 1 during the day time. I took him to washroom at an interval of 1 hour regularly to make him urinate in the washroom. He resisted initially going to washroom so I did not force him to go immediately. I let him finish the current task he was doing and then take him gently to the washroom. But accidents happened initially so whenever he urinated anywhere else I just patiently told him to use the washroom next time. I advised him to tell him whenever he needs to use the washroom. In the beginning he just told me by signs. Each time I taught him how to express his need in words. It took 4-5 days to train him to urinate in the washroom. It may take less or longer depending on your child.
  • Observe the Signs: Each child has a tell tale sign of when he/she is about to do potty. My son hid in the corners of the room or behind the curtains whenever he felt like doing potty. As soon as he hid, I took him the washroom and made him sit on the toilet seat.
  • Make it Fun Time :When I made him sit he was bored initially and didn’t want to sit on the seat at all, so I decided to make it a fun time. I sang him poems or gave him small toys to play with while sitting. We interacted and enjoyed so that he feels comfortable sitting. As children are restless and do not like to it idle.
  • Consistency : The most important point is consistency on your part. It may seem like a big task to take him to loo after each hour or to observe the tell tale signs but the regularity is important for your child to understand that this is the only right way to urinate or to do potty.
  • Be Patient : This is a go to mantra for teaching your child anything. It took atleast 2-3 days for my child to do potty on the seat as initially even when he sat he refused to relieve himself. But each time I advised him gently to use the toilet. It was a task for me to observe him and whenever he went missing for few minutes I searched for him and took him to the loo. It took atleast 15-20 days when he started informing me that he wanted to go ”potty”. And my son was officially potty trained.

There are many methods to potty train the child quickly within 3 days or a week but to fully potty train my child it took approx. 1 month. But it was not a struggle and all of this time was fun for both of us. It make take your child only 1 week to go off the diapers but please ensure to have fun all this time and avoid frustrations on both of your part. And as I always say you are the best mom your child could have and all the decisions and choices of parenting you make are perfect. You know your child the most so whatever you think is right is best for him/her. Lots of love and power to you.

Lost Love

Lost Love.

It’s been years since I felt,
that my stomach is full of butterflies,
It’s been ages since a glimpse of you,
made my heart soar to the skies.

It’s been so long since i could hear,
the violin in the background,
It’s been months since it felt like music,
Every time you made a sound.

It’s been days since your touch,
made my heartbeat go crazy,
It’s been years since your eyes,
Made my mind hazy.

It’s been ages since I saw,
your eyes full of love and care,
It’s been so long since we both had,
any beautiful feelings to share.

It’s been months since we had those fights,
that brought us even closer,
It’s been days since we had the urge,
to just hug each other.

It been years since sitting in silence,
gave us peace and comfort,
It’s been ages since just your smile,
could take away all the hurt.

It’s been so long and I feel,
all that’s left is a distant memory,
And believe me I feel so empty,
and this hollowness is so scary.

I miss how we used to be,
and wonder if you too feel this pain,
I need to know what went wrong,
I need to feel your warmth again.

It is bad to feel lonely,
but worst to feel alone when together,
Sometimes I feel so lost,
And afraid that it’s all over.

It’s hard to go on this way,
And even harder to leave,
It’s difficult to give up on this,
And impossible to believe.

Either show me a way out,
Or show me a way in,
Don’t leave me in this void,
It’s tough to even breathe in.

Love, pull me closer,
Or push me away,
Either ask me to move on,
Or ask me to stay.

I am tired of the waiting,
I am tired of the indifference,
I am tired of living in the memories,
And I am tired of your absence.

Relieve me of this agony,
Relieve me of this pain,
I can bear no longer,
I swear I am going insane.

For It’s been years since I felt,
that my stomach is full of butterflies,
It’s been ages since a glimpse of you,
made my heart soar to the skies.

Is Patriarchy responsible for Women Lacking Behind?

We, women, often complaint of the patriarchal world where women are not given equal rights, are suppressed and are not allowed to live as per their own wishes. Which I cannot contradict as it is true to an extent. But are only men responsible for holding women back from achieving anything in the world? Are only men responsible for every struggle in our life, every rule that bounds us or every judgment we face? From whatever I have experienced in my life I have found that most often a woman is suppressed by woman only. It may sound weird but if you stop to think about it even you would agree to it. So how are women responsible for being a hindrance in development of their own gender let us find out:

  • Believing in Patriarchy : Woman especially older woman believe in patriarchy too much and they are unable to believe that the times are changing. From an early age they start imparting the traits in their daughters, granddaughters to make them understand the difference between the roles of both the genders thinking that it will help the little girls in their future. They teach them cooking, cleaning and every other chores not as life skills but as their duties which they have to do in order to have successful marriages. They teach them to be gentle, shy, submissive and people pleasing. This lesson that has been passed on from generation to generation plays a major role in upbringing of girls who think that it is only their responsibility to make the marriages work and they have to do everything in their power to please everyone.

  • Pampering ‘Sons’ too much : The male child are often pampered too much and their almost all the wishes are fulfilled. It is hard for them to learn that they can be denied something and ‘No’ doesn’t seem to be an acceptable word for them. Moreover they are not taught any of the chores, never given the ‘pep’ talk about importance of being a people pleaser or taught to learn to compromise and meet the half way. They are never told that they also need to work and be involved 100% in every aspect of their relationship. This pampering as a child makes them feel entitled. Even if they do something for their partners they often consider it as ‘’help’’ instead of their duty. Their egos are inflated and they only feel responsible to provide for their family. In order to achieve equality it is important to educate both the genders equally both academically and socially.

  • Judging Too Much ; We, women, are often quick to judge other women too soon. ‘Did you see what she was wearing? It’s so revealing’’. ‘She is so old-fashioned; my mother wears better clothes than her’. ‘She has so many male friends, I bet they are not just her ‘’friends’’ , ‘ She seems a lousy mother and lousier wife, she make her husband and son work at home’ and so on, you have got the general idea. Consider any social get-together you will find men busy drinking, talking about their jobs, sports, politics etc. and women gossiping about each other. Now I am not trying to stereotype, nothing is applicable to all. But if you think about it, it is generally true. If we somehow break the pattern and start supporting each other instead of criticizing each other we can not only motivate but also help in removing the fear of judgment which is the most important cause of hindering women development. ‘ What will people think’ should never be a problem anymore. Sometimes we just like to see the next generation suffering the same fate as us just in the name of traditions. We forget the pain we felt when we were at their age and inflict the same wounds on them as inflicted on us. Other times elder women find it hard to accept the new thinking of the younger ones and try to suppress them and mold them as per the rules of the house. We need to accept other woman and their unique way of  doing things and appreciate them just as the way they are.

  • Lack of Backbone : It is essential to stand up for ourselves and equally important to stand up for women near us. Don’t be fooled by the thinking ‘ Sadiyon se yahi chalta aa raha hai (It’s been going on for ages)’. If it is going on for ages it doesn’t mean that it is correct. It need not go on forever. Take a stand for those who are dependent on you and those who look up to you so that they can live a free and happy life.

  • Competitive Nature : Human beings are very competitive in nature. But we women take it a notch higher. We want to be most beautiful, stylish woman who is the best cook, best wife, daughter-in-law, mother and best in everything. We find it hard to see someone else being praised by our loved ones as we are very possessive in nature. Our world revolves around our loved ones and we want to see their world revolving around us and if we find someone else threatening our position we find it difficult to accept. Many times a mother-in –law resents her daughter in law just because she is getting the attention of her son. When someone finds out about the extra marital affair of her husband she blames the other women for breaking her house instead of her husband forgetting that her husband is actually guiltier as he is the one who swore to be by her side forever. Whereas you will find  a man blaming the wife more. Similarly in offices we find women targeting other women in every possible way to succeed believing that only one of them can rise and make it a competition to be the best women in the company. They find it easier to target other women instead of joining hands and competing in a healthy way with all team members equally.  This needs to end and we need to hold the hands and up-lift each other if we want to see the women rising.

As the saying goes ‘’ Be the woman who fixes another woman’s crown without telling the world that it was crooked’’. Try and correct the wrongs we have been doing to other women both un-intentionally and intentionally and see that the world is not so biased anymore. When women support each other incredible things happen. Let the magic begin.

“भगवान विष्णु के दशावतार” – जीवन विकास की वैज्ञानिक कहानी (Dashavatar of Lord Vishnu” – The Scientific Story of Life Evolution)

“Mom, I am a genetic scientist. I am working in the US on the evolution of man. Theory of evolution. Charles Darwin, have you heard of him? ” Vasu asked.

His Mother sat next to him, smiled and said, “I know about Darwin, Vasu. But Have you heard of Dashavatar? The ten avatars of Vishnu?”

Vasu replied yes.

“Ok! Then let me tell you what you and your Darwin don’t know.

Listen carefully-

The first avatar was the Matsya avatar, it means the fish. That is because life began in the water. Is that not right?”

Vasu began to listen with a little more attention.

She continued, “Then came the Kurma Avatar, which means the tortoise, because life moved from the water to the land. The amphibian! So the Tortoise denoted the evolution from sea to land.

Third avatar was Varaha, the wild boar, which meant the wild animals with not much intellect, you call them the Dinosaurs, correct?” Vasu nodded wide eyed.

“The fourth avatar was Narasimha, half man and half animal, the evolution from wild animals to intelligent beings.

Fifth, the Vaman avatar, the midget or dwarf, who could grow really tall. Do you know why that is? Because, there were two kinds of humans, Homo Erectus and Homo Sapiens and Homo Sapiens won that battle.”

Vasu could see that his Mother was in full flow and he was stupefied.

“The Sixth avatar was Parshuram, the man who wielded the axe, the man who was a cave and forest dweller. Angry, and not social.

The seventh avatar was Ram, the first rational thinking social being, who practised and laid out the laws of society and the basis of human relationships.

The Eighth avatar was Balarama, a true farmer who showed value of agriculture in the life.

The Ninth avatar was Krishna, the statesman, the politician, the diplomat, the Ambassador, the sutile interpreter, the lover who played the game of society and taught how to live and thrive in the adhaarmic social structure.

And finally, my boy, will come Kalki, the man you are working on. The man who will be genetically supreme.”

Vasu looked at his Mother speechless. “This is amazing Mom, how did you …. ? This makes sense!”

She said, “Yes it does, son! We Indians knew some amazing things, but just didn’t know how to pass it on scientifically. So we made them into mythological stories. Mythology creates faith and makes man sensible. It is just the way you look at it – Religious or Scientific. Your call.”
