The Kansas Ironman – Glenn Cunningham

Glenn Cunningham was born in Atlanta, Kansas on August 4, 1909. When he was merely 6 years old he was badly burnt along with his older brother, Floyd, in an accidental fire in his school. Whereas his brother succumbed to his burn injuries,  life of Glenn also hung by a thread. However he miraculously survived to the amazement of his doctors but his legs were so badly burned that the doctors suggested amputation.

His mother and father declined the suggestion. Glenn had lost any motor ability waist down and was forced to be a cripple lifetime. But Glenn declined to be doomed by his fate and made up his mind to walk on his feet again. Both his parents supported him and massaged his legs daily in hope of some sensation or feeling in their little boy’s legs but to no avail. One day when his mother had taken him outside in his wheelchair he threw himself down and dragged his body on grass upto the fence in his yard. With the support of the fence he lifted himself with great difficulty and began dragging his lifeless lower body along the fence.

His mother encouraged him and this began as a daily practice. With his determination and his parents’ love and support Glenn began walking again. He recovered his strength in legs. He would often run just for the feel of being able to use his legs again and soon developed a passion for running By the age of 12, he had beaten all the local runners. He had won the battle of recovery but throughout his life he had to massage his legs and spend longer time in warm up exercises to maintain circulation in his deeply scarred legs. But this difficulty made him more determined.

In year 1933 he received the James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States. In the same year he was nicknamed Kansas Ironman. In 1934, he set the world record for the mile run at 4:06.8, which stood for three years. He also set world records in the 800 m in 1936 and in the indoor mile in 1938.

A park is named after Cunningham has a park  in his hometown of Elkhart, Kansas and the mile run at the Kansas Relays is named in his honor. In 1974, he was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame– a museum to salute Americans who have made important contributions in Track and Field.

This story of a little boy who survived miraculously from the fire, lost his ability to even stand on his own feet, achieving so much in life only because of his determination restores our faith in saying where there is a will there is a way. In life there are many occasions where we feel we may not be able to make a comeback or overcome some difficulty but we should always remember we can do anything when we make up our mind and remain firm on our goal.

7 Inventions by Ancient Indians used in Day to Day Life

Indus Valley Civilization is the earliest urban culture of Indian sub continent and one of the oldest three civilizations in the world. It is known for it’s well planned cities and fabulous crafts. New evidence suggests the Indus Valley Civilization in India predates Egypt and Mesopotamia and may be 8000 years old.

We Indians have contributed extraordinarily in many fields like mathematics, surgery, medicine, astronomy etc.all of which will be discussed in my future blogs. Here is a list of interesting inventions by Ancient Indians which are still used in day to day life:

  1. Flush Toilets Systems and Sanitation Systems ( 2500 B.C) : Indus valley civilization had water flushed toilets. The cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro were laid out in grids.Individual homes were supplied with water from wells and waste water was diverted to covered drains. This is perhaps the world’s first known sanitation system.
  1. Rulers ( 2400 B.C.) :Rulers of ivory were uncovered from ruins in areas of Indus valley civilization. One such specimen was calibrated to less than 2 mm.
  1. Weighing Scale (2400 B.C) :In Indus valley civilization balances were used to compare measure and goods in trade.
  1. Shampoo : The word shampoo in English is derived from Hindustani “champo” and dates to 1762. A variety of herbs and their extracts were used as shampoo since ancient times in India.
  1. Natural Fibres:The products made from natural fibres such as cotton, wool and jute have been originated in India. Our country pioneered in jute and cotton cultivation.
  1. Buttons : Buttons in Indus valley civilization were used for ornamental purposes and were made from sea shells. Some buttons had geometrical shapes and had holes in them to attach to clothing by thread.
  1. Patravali (Leaf Plates) : Patravali or pattal is Indian eating plate made with broad dried leaves. A company, Leaf Republic , from Germany had claimed to invent it a few years ago however we have been using it since centuries.

How many of these Inventions you already knew about and is there any other interesting thing you would like to add in this list let me know in the comments.

Why do I want wings??

Do I want to fly?

Yes… But where and why??

I need to get out of this monotonous life and laugh till my stomach hurts.

I want to see the endless oceans, the sky and the dirts.

I need to live free.. free of ‘’the routine’’

I want the inner peace and feel the calm and serene.

I want to live some days without the clock ticking in mind

I want to hear only the words loving and kind

I need to live without the fear of judgment

I want to find somewhere the sense of fulfillment.

I need to know the reason behind all this running

I want to know my real aim and my life’s meaning.

Do I actually need the money, power and fame?

Do I need to win life’s every game??

Do I really need everyone’s approval of me?

Do I need to think what everyone is thinking of me?

No I just need the wings, the wings for my heart, mind and soul.

To make happiness my life’s only goal.
